Ingredients
2.5 cups all-purpose flour
, plus more for dusting
2 tablespoons white sugar
0.5 teaspoons salt
1 cup shortening
0.5 cups milk
2 large egg yolks
2 large egg whites
, beaten
9 medium apples - peeled
, cored and sliced
0.75 cups white sugar
0.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1.5 cups confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish.
2
Stir 2 1/2 cups flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, and salt together in a medium bowl until well blended. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Whisk 1/2 cup milk and egg yolks together in a small bowl until well mixed; stir into flour mixture until dough comes together.
3
Divide dough in half. Roll out 1 dough piece on a lightly floured surface to the size of the prepared baking dish. Press dough into the dish to form bottom crust; brush the top lightly with beaten egg whites. Fill with sliced apples and sprinkle with 3/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll out remaining dough piece and place over apples. Brush the top lightly with beaten egg whites.
4
Bake in the preheated oven until crust is golden, 35 to 40 minutes. Allow to cool completely.
5
Beat confectioners' sugar, 3 tablespoons milk, vanilla, and salt in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bars, then cut into 20 squares.
