  1. 1 Gather all ingredients. Heat oil in a deep-fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. 2 Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  3. 3 Mix in butter until crumbly.
  4. 4 Stir in milk and egg until smooth.
  5. 5 Knead lightly, then turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll or pat to 1/4-inch thickness.
  6. 6 Cut with a doughnut cutter, or use two round biscuit cutters of different sizes.
  7. 7 Lay doughnuts in hot oil, a few at a time. Do not overcrowd the pan, or oil may overflow.
  8. 8 Fry, turning once, until golden, about 3 minutes.
