  2. 2 Cream sugar and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, then add water and vanilla. Stir flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a separate bowl until well mixed; beat into egg mixture just to combine. Stir in apples and chocolate chips until evenly distributed. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  3. 3 Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted near the center of cake comes out clean, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
