These dream bars are rich and chewy. They're made with an old-time South Dakota recipe that makes a simple crust topped with a layer of chewy coconut and nuts. Cocoa is an optional ingredient.

  1. 1 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. 2 Beat ½ cup brown sugar and butter together in a medium bowl until smooth; stir in 1 ½ cups flour. Press firmly into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  3. 3 Bake in the preheated oven until crust is golden, about 15 minutes.
  4. 4 Combine remaining 1 ½ cups brown sugar and eggs in a medium bowl; stir in vanilla. Whisk remaining ¼ cup flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together in a separate bowl; stir into egg mixture. Fold in coconut and walnuts; pour into crust.
  5. 5 Bake in the preheated oven until firm, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool, then cut into squares.
