Pizza Buns

Servings:

The elementary school I attended back in the 1950s used to make these, and were a favorite of most everyone. My wife and I spent a lot of time trying to recreate these when we were first married. Our kids (now in their 30s) still request these when they come to visit. We use canned pizza sauce but spice it up. Leftovers are easily reheated in the toaster oven.

Instructions

  1. 1 Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven's broiler.
  2. 2 Place bun halves, crust sides down, onto a baking sheet. Broil buns until just toasted, about 1 minute. Watch them carefully, they burn easily. Set aside.
  3. 3 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  4. 4 Cook and stir ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes. Drain excess grease. Add onion to beef; cook and stir until onion translucent, about 5 minutes more. Stir in pizza sauce, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil, then simmer to blend the flavors, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring often.
  5. 5 Spoon sauce over buns on the baking sheet; top each with about 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese.
  6. 6 Bake in the preheated oven until cheese bubbly and lightly browned, about 10 minutes.
