My mother-in-law gave me this hot water pastry recipe as a "no-fail" pastry when I married 20 years ago. Add up to a 1/2 cup more cake flour if necessary.
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 0.5 cups boiling water
- 2 cups cake flour
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
-
1
Place shortening into a heat-proof bowl. Pour in boiling water and whip mixture until creamy.
-
2
Mix together flour and salt in a separate bowl. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture. Stir until pastry stops sticking to the sides of the bowl. Refrigerate pastry before rolling it out.

Basque Salad
This recipe is inspired by Woolgrowers Restaurant in Bakersfield, California. Among the many appetizers they give, there is one that is very much like this salad which is handy to have in the refrigerator. It is very good and close to my inspiration.
Whiskey Sidecar Slush
This frozen sidecar is great to cool off in the summer heat.
Air Fryer Ranch-Stuffed Olives
These air-fried olives come out super crispy and the ranch is built right in so no dipping sauce is required.
