My mother-in-law gave me this hot water pastry recipe as a "no-fail" pastry when I married 20 years ago. Add up to a 1/2 cup more cake flour if necessary.
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 0.5 cups boiling water
- 2 cups cake flour
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
-
1
Place shortening into a heat-proof bowl. Pour in boiling water and whip mixture until creamy.
-
2
Mix together flour and salt in a separate bowl. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture. Stir until pastry stops sticking to the sides of the bowl. Refrigerate pastry before rolling it out.

Chicken Alfredo Heart-Shaped Pizza
This pizza is a breakaway from the traditional red sauce pizza. Homemade Alfredo sauce, grilled chicken, spinach, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese pair beautifully on this pizza. While homemade dough is always a plus, feel free to use store-bought pizza dough (I prefer Winco® pizza dough). Perfect for 2 to share.
Ham and Noodle Casserole
This ham and noodle casserole is one of my favorite ways to use leftover ham. It's rich and creamy with a crunchy bread crumb topping. Always a winning dinner!
Red Hot Baked Apples
These Red Hot baked apples are an old-fashioned, oven-baked dessert that everybody loves. My mom always baked apples, but I added the Red Hots because I love them.
