This is an old German recipe. The cake improves with aging, so bake several days ahead.
Ingredients
- 4 eggs , separated
- 0.75 cups white sugar
- 1 cup honey
- 0.33 cups vegetable oil
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 0.5 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 0.5 teaspoons ground cloves
- 0.5 teaspoons ground allspice
- 3 teaspoons instant coffee granules
- 1 cup hot water
Instructions
-
1
Mix coffee in hot water, and then cool.
-
2
In a large bowl, beat the yolks with the sugar until creamy. Add the oil and then the honey, beating after each addition. Beat until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
-
3
Sift and then measure 3 cups of flour. Combine with salt, baking powder, baking soda, and spices. Add these dry ingredients alternately with the coffee to the honey mixture, stirring only until blended. Do not overmix.
-
4
Whip egg whites until stiff. Fold in three additions into the batter. Pour into 2 greased 8 inch square pans.
-
5
Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of cake comes out clean.

Southwestern Egg Rolls with Avocado Cilantro Sauce
Mix a blend of Southwestern-style ingredients to make a non-traditional egg roll that excites the palate from Chungah Rhee of Damn Delicious. The cilantro sauce takes the flavors to the next level.
Grilled Chicken Thighs with Mango-Ancho Sauce
Sweet mango and smoky ancho chile are combined to make both a delicious marinade and a sauce for these grilled chicken thighs. This isn't spicy, so the whole family can enjoy it. I like to serve this with cilantro-lime rice.
Italian Cream Cake Cookies
My family loves Italian cream cake, so I created this cookie to be an easy, cute, and snack-sized dessert with all of the flavor of a slice of Italian cream cake. This is the first recipe I've ever created, and every time I make it for family or friends, it is a big hit!
