Irish Barmbrack
Barmbrack or brack is a traditional Irish fruitcake or fruit loaf. It was traditionally served at Halloween but is now eaten all year round. It's delicious as-is or spread with a little butter. It is tradition to add objects to the barmbrack which symbolize certain things for the person who receives it in their slice: a coin — wealth or good fortune; a ring — will marry within the year!
Fennel Soda Bread
This soda bread is so delicious. It was the topic of conversation at the table when I served it with dinner. Everyone loved it! Perfect on St Patrick's day with Irish stew or on its own.
Struffoli
Struffoli are delicious little balls of fried dough with a sweet honey glaze, formed into a tower or Christmas tree shape and decorated with colorful sprinkles. My grandma always made them every year, but since she can't do it anymore, I came up with this recipe that she loves because they are a little bit sweeter than the traditional ones.
Blini (Russian Pancakes)
This blinchiki or blini recipe is a popular Russian dish widely consumed during the Maslenitsa festival. All kinds of sweet and savory fillings are possible. Don't worry if the first few don't turn out right; you'll get the hang of it.
Pumpkin-Shaped Dinner Rolls
This very Instagram-friendly roll is the perfect thing to bring to that holiday gathering, and can be made using your favorite dinner roll recipe. Sure, these take longer to make than your already perfectly fine dinner rolls, but that's nothing when you consider all the compliments that will be coming your way.
Croissants
Authentic French croissants. Patience and effort are required but the results are totally worth it!
Baked Apple Roses
These delicious apple roses are gorgeous-looking pastries that are way easier to make than you think! They were inspired by a Brazilian cook, named Ana, who is now a food blogger in Italy. I hope you give them a try soon.
Chef John's Sticky Buns
The first recipe I made for my family after my first semester of culinary school was sticky buns. Ever since then, they've had a special place in my heart. It's been my experience with baking that the harder a dough is to work with, the better it comes out and this is no exception — the contrast between this beautifully tender, airy dough and the sweet, crunchy, sticky topping is just otherworldly.
Oliebollen (Dutch Doughnuts)
Oliebollen are Dutch pastries similar to doughnuts. These deep-fried treats are typically filled with raisins and dusted with powdered sugar. Some modern variations are served with berry filling, but this is a traditional recipe. Oliebollen are a popular treat on New Year's. Eat them hot if possible!
Zeppole
Zeppole are sweet Italian donuts traditionally served warm in paper bags with lots of confectioners' sugar at Italian festivals. They're also a favorite at Christmas and St Joseph's Day. This homemade zeppole recipe uses ricotta cheese for extra flavor and fluffiness.
Mochi Donuts
These homemade mochi donuts are crispy on the exterior with a light, fluffy interior, which maintains that mochi chew. They are not too sweet, which is how we like our donuts.
Nana's Fastnachts
Fastnachts are similar to doughnuts and beignets but much tastier! They are usually made on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras).
