Head to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and you're sure to find a heaping helping of this traditional Cape Breton blueberry grunt dessert. It's easy to prepare and delicious to eat! Serve hot, topped with whipped cream.
Ingredients
- 3 cups fresh blueberries
- 1.5 cups white sugar , divided
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 pinch salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Add blueberries to the bottom of a casserole dish; sprinkle 1 cup sugar over top.

Cream remaining 1/2 cup sugar, egg, and shortening together in a large bowl. Add flour, milk, baking powder, and salt; beat until evenly combined. Drop by spoonfuls over blueberries.

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.
