In looking for a healthier version of the standard ginger beef, I came up with this non-deep fried easy ginger beef. The longer you marinate the beef, the more ginger flavor it soaks up.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 piece fresh ginger , 1 inch
- 1 round steak , 1 pound
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 12 mushrooms , sliced
- 1 onion , chopped
- 1 red bell pepper , chopped
- 0.25 cups sweet and sour sauce
- 4 cups cooked rice
Instructions
-
1
Whisk soy sauce and ginger together in a large glass or ceramic bowl. Add steak and toss to evenly coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight.
-
2
Heat a wok over high heat. Add steak mixture; cover wok and cook until steak browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer steak to a plate.
-
3
Heat butter in wok over high heat; stir in mushrooms, onion, bell pepper, and sweet and sour sauce. Cover and cook until vegetables begin to soften, about 3 minutes. Stir in cooked steak; cook until heated through, about 2 minutes. Serve over cooked rice.

Yakamein (New Orleans-Style Noodle Soup)
This is my take on yakamein (New Orleans-style noodle soup) that's famous only locally, but is one soup you'll want to know about. Known in New Orleans as a very effective hangover cure—its nickname is Old Sober—it is also a beautifully comforting and delicious thing to eat.
Kombu Seaweed Salad
Perfect way to use leftover kombu from making dashi. You can use ponzu sauce in addition to or instead of soy sauce if you want to experiment.
Golden Milk (Turmeric Milk)
This golden milk recipe makes a cozy, soothing drink. I sampled different amounts of warm almond milk, turmeric, and ginger to achieve the perfect balance between creamy and spicy. Use your favorite milk, and sweeten with honey or maple syrup if you like.
