Also known as a Lonkero, this popular Finnish highball originated at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics and has recently gained popularity in the U.S. It's traditionally served in a tall ("long") glass, hence the name. I find that Fresca and white grapefruit juice give this drink the most authentic flavor, but ruby red grapefruit juice can be used for a sweeter, less tart flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup ice , or as needed
- 3 ounces grapefruit flavored soda , such as Fresca
- 2 fluids ounces white grapefruit juice
- 2 fluids ounces gin
- 0.5 fluids ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 splash club soda , or as needed
- 1 slice grapefruit for garnish
Instructions
-
1
Fill a highball glass with ice. Add grapefruit soda, grapefruit juice, gin, and lemon juice; stir to combine.
-
2
Top with club soda, lightly stir again, and garnish with grapefruit slice.

Apple Pie Moonshine
This apple pie moonshine tastes like apple pie in a jar, but it does pack quite a kick if you're not careful. The longer it sits in the fridge, the better it gets. Place a cinnamon stick in each jar if you like a lot of cinnamon. Makes a great gift.
Zucchini e Pomodori Gratinati (Zucchini and Tomato Gratin)
A quick and easy vegetarian zucchini-tomato-mozzarella bake for two, a starter for four, or even a side. A rustic Italian favorite, taught me by my Roman friends. If serving as a main, then crusty bread, torn off the loaf by hand, and a green salad with a lemon and/or lime vinaigrette dressing cannot be beat.
Chile Relleno Casserole
This Mexican-style casserole made with ground beef and green chile peppers is a much simpler version of chile rellenos, which are simply stuffed chile peppers.
