This green bean casserole is an adaptation of the traditional holiday side dish. If you and your guests are looking for something a bit more enticing than the usual "mushroom soup casserole," this one with cheese will surely become a staple in your recipe box!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 packages frozen French-cut green beans , 16 ounce
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1.5 cups shredded Cheddar cheese , divided
- 2 cups French-fried onions , divided
Instructions
-
1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
-
2
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add flour and stir slowly until it forms a smooth paste. Quickly stir in green beans, sour cream, salt, and sugar before the flour paste becomes too thick or overcooked. Continue to cook and stir occasionally over medium heat until green beans have thawed and started to cook, 7 to 10 minutes.
-
3
Transfer hot mixture to a large mixing bowl and gently stir in 1 cup of Cheddar cheese and 1 cup of fried onions until evenly mixed. Transfer to a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish and top with remaining Cheddar and onions.
-
4
Bake in the preheated oven until bubbly, about 30 minutes.

Red Wine-Braised Lamb Shanks
Succulent braised lamb shanks slow cooked in a red wine, tomato, and fresh basil sauce. Serve with mushroom risotto and grilled zucchini.
Cheddar and Olive Balls
This olive ball recipe is based on one from a famous Virginia colonial tavern. I've had much better success with this recipe than the one published in their cookbook. It's great for parties, picnics, or potlucks. It also freezes well (uncooked) for quick prep anytime.
The Humble Shepherd
Ground turkey stands in for ground beef or the more traditional lamb in this simple version of shepherd's pie. Frozen vegetables make assembly simple; you can even use instant mashed potatoes instead of making your own to cut down on preparation time.
