This is my mother's recipe for traditional Southern-style sweet potato pie. She's "Mimi" to my kids, and we all love this pie right out of the oven, at room temperature, or after it's been chilled in the refrigerator.
Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes , scrubbed
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 0.5 cups unsalted butter , softened
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon , Optional
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg , Optional
- 1 pinch ground allspice , Optional
- 1 pinch ground cloves , Optional
- 2 pies crusts , 9 inch
Instructions
-
1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
-
2
Bring a pot of water to a boil; add sweet potatoes and boil until soft, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain, then remove and discard skins.
-
3
Mash sweet potatoes in a bowl until no lumps remain; transfer 1 cup to a large bowl, and reserve the rest for another use.
-
4
Add sugar, condensed milk, butter, eggs, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves to sweet potatoes in the large bowl. Mix until well combined, then divide batter evenly between pie crusts.
-
5
Bake in the preheated oven until firm, about 45 minutes.

Veggie Quinoa
I blundered into this delicious mix of ingredients while trying to use up leftover vegetables in the fridge. Even friends who 'don't like vegetarian cooking' have enjoyed it. I like the slightly bitter taste of unwashed quinoa (just check for unwanted debris before you use it), but most recipes call for rinsed quinoa.
Salami, Cream Cheese, and Pepperoncini Roll-Ups
Salami, cream cheese, and pepperoncini roll-ups are a great snack and appetizer to bring to any party. I have so many people requesting them, I make these every time guests come over!
Chinese Hand-Pulled Noodles
These Chinese hand-pulled noodles, or la mian, are fresh, deliciously chewy, and made with just three ingredients. This recipe is from Lanzhou in Northwest China. It makes a lot of noodles and requires a little patience, so you might want to start with half the amount. Serve the cooked noodles in your favorite Chinese broth for a savory treat!
