Hard tack, also called knäckebröd, is biscuit-like, crunchy, and sweet. Very nice with butter or cheese.

Ingredients

  • 2.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cups white sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk , or more as needed

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

  2. 2

Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl. Rub in butter until mixture appears sandy. Stir in buttermilk, a little at a time, until dough holds together.

  3. 3

Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and roll out to a 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into 4-inch squares; cut each square diagonally into triangles, then prick with a fork. Place on ungreased cookie sheets.

  4. 4

Bake in the preheated oven until dry and lightly browned, about 10 minutes.
