Easy Fermented Pickled Veggies
These easy fermented pickled veggies, or refrigerator pickles, are great for your gut, and they add funky flavor and crunch to salads, sandwiches, and snack plates. Be sure to trim the ends of cucumbers; enzymes in the blossom ends can make pickles soft.
Candied Jalapeños
These homemade sweet and spicy candied jalapeños will add a little heat to sandwiches, cornbread, burgers, pizza, and even cocktails!
Orange Marmalade
This orange marmalade recipe makes a sweet and citrusy preserve with just the slightest detectable bitterness that balances out the sweetness and tang perfectly. Orange and lemon rinds are suspended throughout the thickened marmalade and it has a lovely orange color as well.
Strawberry Jam
This strawberry jam recipe is by far the easiest recipe I have found for strawberry jam without using pectin. The jam is soft, spreadable, and delicious.
Crisp Pickled Green Beans
These pickled green beans turn out very crisp with a wonderful dill flavor, and the red pepper flakes provide a nice punch. This recipe is from my grandmother's cookbook that she passed on to all her grandchildren. It's much better than those that call for cooking the beans first.
Roux-Based Authentic Seafood Gumbo with Okra
This from-scratch gumbo made with a roux takes a little bit of time, but it is well worth the effort. No bouillon, chopped tomatoes, chicken, sausage, or bacon here! Impress your Cajun friends with this wonderful gumbo. Serve over white rice with a side of French bread.
Apple Cider Beef Stew
Cubed stew beef combines with apples and apple cider to create a simple and sweet meal for the whole family to enjoy! Serve with a hearty, crusty bread.
Short Ribs Braised with Mushrooms and Tomatoes
This short ribs recipe slowly braises short ribs with easy-to-find dried porcini mushrooms (for real, ask someone at the fancy grocery store and they'll find them for you!) until they turn into a triumph of fork-tender goodness. I love these short ribs over mashed potatoes, but the rich tomato and mushroom gravy is fantastic over soft polenta as well. I really hope you give this cool-weather wonder a try.
Mom's Chicken en Cocotte
This easy chicken en cocotte is a farm-style French dish that my mom's German grandmother taught her to make as a young girl. It's similar to our pot roast meals and very tasty. Mom updated the original recipe to make it even easier for us to make all these years later. She always made enough to make a different meal with her leftovers as well.
Aush (Afghani Chili)
Aush is a delicious alternative to American-style chili. It's not too spicy but combines intriguing flavors. I adapted this recipe from a traditional Afghani family favorite. It may be cooked in a slow cooker, Dutch oven, or soup pot. Try it also with ground lamb or ground turkey.
Chicken with 40 Cloves of Garlic
You read that right, 40 cloves of garlic! If you like garlic, you will love this whole roasted chicken.
Pot Roast, Vegetables, and Beer
This pot roast recipe braises the beef in dark beer. It is a great recipe for a family meal. Short on prep time and it makes great gravy for your meat and vegetables.
