Pfeffernüsse (German "Pepper-Nut" Christmas Cookies)
The name "Pfeffernüsse" translates to pepper-nut, even though these cookies don't contain either. Back in the day, "pepper" was a generic name for any type of spice, and these were were called "nuts" because they looked like nuts! Misleading names aside, I think this is the best Christmas cookie of all time. They're soft and chewy with a thin, crisp icing and the perfect combination of warming winter spices. Pack up a tin and share these delicious cookies with family and friends!
Salted Pumpkin Caramels
Making your own homemade salted pumpkin caramels is much easier than you would think. Scooping out a pumpkin and carving a jack-o-lantern is much harder! If you've never made caramel candy, this recipe is a great place to start.
Potato Chip Cookies
These potato chip cookies are the most delicious and texturally fascinating chocolate chip cookies you'll ever bake. They don't taste like potatoes, in case you were concerned about that. The potato chips add flavor that pairs perfectly with the dark chocolate, and add a gorgeous color to the cookie—but it's the texture that makes them truly irresistible.
Wildflower Honey Cake
Wildflower honey cake is a very old-fashioned cake made with my personal favorite kind of honey, produced by the happiest bees, wildflower honey. Finished with a toasted honey syrup, it has so much more flavor than cakes made with plain sugar, and is one of the easiest cake batters ever.
Grandma's Creamy Peanut Butter Fudge
This old-fashioned style of peanut butter fudge is not that easy to find out there. The ones I tend to run across always seem to be the soft, creamy version, which is not what I'm into. If it's going to feel like peanut butter in my mouth, then what's the point? No, I want something that feels dense and firm in my fingers but will almost instantly liquefy in when it hits my tongue.
Chef John's Almond Biscotti
My almond biscotti recipe is pretty straightforward and you are rewarded with a big batch of classic Italian dipping cookies. You can add hazelnuts, pistachios, and any type of dried fruit. Or dip them in dark chocolate.
Potato Leek Soup (Vichyssoise)
There is nothing better on a chilly, damp day than a steaming bowl of potato leek soup; and conversely, few things are as delicious and refreshing on a hot, sweaty day than a bowl of ice cold vichyssoise.
Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili
The extra step of roasting the sweet potatoes really concentrates the sweet, earthy flavors and gives the starchy chunks a marvelously meaty texture.
Italian White Bean and Sausage Stew
This comforting and substantial Italian white bean and sausage stew is a soup that eats like a meal! Browning the sausage in a dry pan creates a beautiful fond that adds rich flavor. With beans, greens, and sausage, this Italian stew recipe is incredibly nutritious and warms you from the inside out. Serve with a hunk of crusty Italian bread.
Quick and Easy Black Bean Soup
All you need is a couple cans of beans, an onion, some bacon, and spices to whip up this simple but delicious soup.
Chef John's Tuscan Bean Soup
Since fall and winter are full of shorter, darker days, we're going to need some coping strategies, and this hearty Tuscan bean soup is one of the more effective. There's just something about that combo of smooth, silky soup, and crunchy, crispy croutons that makes everything seem okay.
Red Velvet Pots de Crème
These red velvet pots de crème are a special occasion chocolate dessert that is plenty decadent, but still somehow light. With a deeper chocolate flavor than typical red velvet cake, and a little bit of cream cheese tanginess. they are super easy, gorgeous, and incredibly delicious.
