This marinated, broiled flank steak is a family favorite. We've made this recipe for over 30 years, and I have passed it on to friends more times than I can count!
Ingredients
- 0.5 cups vegetable oil
- 0.5 cups soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic , minced
- 0.25 teaspoons ground black pepper
- 2 flanks steaks , 2 ½ pound
Instructions
-
1
Combine oil, soy sauce, water, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, and pepper in a small bowl. Mix until combined.
-
2
Cut shallow slashes in a crosshatch pattern on both sides of the steak, being careful not to cut all the way through.
-
3
Place steak in a low, flat dish and pour marinade on top, covering meat completely. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight, turning steak over once.
-
4
Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven's broiler. Remove steak from the marinade and place on a baking pan. Reserve marinade.
-
5
Broil, brushing occasionally with marinade, until browned and heated through, about 5 minutes per side. Remove steak to a platter and cover loosely with foil. Let rest for at least 5 minutes. Slice into 1- to 2-inch strips across the grain.

Outrageous Warm Chicken Nacho Dip
This crockpot chicken queso dip is my jazzed-up version of the classic queso dip made heartier with shredded chicken. Serve this crowd-pleasing dip with tortilla chips while watching the big game, or load up your slow cooker and take it to potlucks or tailgate parties. Customize the heat by adjusting the number of jalapeños you use.
Ham Chowder
I made this ham chowder recipe with leftovers I had one day. It's a ham- and potato-based soup with leeks, onions, rosemary, cream, bacon, and carrots. The ham and bacon give this soup a smoky taste while the cream gives it a rich texture. Chowder is better served the next day.
Fresh Sweet Cranberry Sauce with a Twist
I've been making these cranberries for nearly 30 years. It's the first thing I prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I make them the weekend before so they have lots of time to sit and have even better flavor! I hollow out fresh oranges for serving cups. Makes a beautiful presentation and I use the orange segments in my turkey brine. Cut the oranges in a zig-zag pattern around the center to make it even more holiday special! Make ahead several days before serving for best flavor. I suppose they could be served warm as well, but I find the coolness of the berries is a nice contrast with the other hot foods in the meal. You can use 2 to 3 cinnamon sticks in place of ground cinnamon, which will yield a lighter color.
