My father's aunt used to make this gravy for breakfast every time we came to visit. It has been a staple in our family for as long as I can remember. I have tweaked it a little to suit my husband's taste but for me it's still the brown breakfast gravy I grew up with. Serve over warm biscuits.
Ingredients
- 6 slices bacon
- 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 can evaporated milk , 12 fluid ounce
- 0.5 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 0.5 teaspoons ground black pepper
- salt to taste

Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain bacon slices on paper towels and crumble when cool enough to handle.

Add flour to the bacon grease and stir until a paste forms. Cook and stir until lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Gradually add evaporated milk and milk, stirring frequently. Add butter, sugar, pepper, and salt; continue to cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in crumbled bacon and serve.

Slow Cooker Tuscan Chicken
When it's too hot to cook, throw this dinner in the slow cooker and wait for compliments. This rustic dish uses boneless, skinless chicken thighs, lots of seasonings, and pitted Castelvetrano olives. We really enjoy their brighter taste and color in this dish. The red pepper flakes just add a bit of zing to the sun dried tomatoes and good-for-you spinach in the sauce. Be sure to serve this with a crusty bread, so you can soak up all the tasty, creamy goodness!

Grandma's Old-Fashioned Yeast Rolls
This recipe is one of our family traditions. We don't know how old it is, but it is at least Depression Era (no milk, no eggs). It was handed down from my Grandma Pearl Nash. She never wrote down the recipe, always measured by memory and her hands. She developed breast cancer in the early 60's and shortly before she died. My Daddy asked her to measure out all the ingredients so the recipe would not be lost. He carried her into the kitchen, where she carefully placed the ingredients on newsprint paper. My mama (who my kids called Tutu) shifted the ingredients into measuring cups and spoons to record the amounts.
