Looking for a way to use up some extra sourdough starter, I created this recipe. These scones bake up incredibly tender and moist, and my kids absolutely love the warm, cinnamon-rich flavor of the apple pie spice.
Ingredients
- 2.5 cups bread flour
- 0.5 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 0.5 cups white sugar
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
- 0.33 cups cold unsalted butter
- 1.25 cups sourdough starter
- 2 tablespoons milk , Optional
- 2 tablespoons coarse sugar , for garnish
Instructions
-
1
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
2
Whisk flour, salt, cream of tartar, baking soda, sugar, and apple pie spice together in a bowl. Cut in butter with a knife or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add sourdough starter and mix by hand to form a soft dough.
-
3
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 4 pieces. Pat or roll one piece of dough into a 1/2-inch thick round. Cut it into 4 wedge-shaped pieces and place the prepared baking sheet about 1 inch apart. Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough. Brush the tops of scones with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
-
4
Bake until scones begin to turn golden, 12 to 15 minutes.

Baked Mac and Cheese Bites
These baked mac and cheese bites, crispy around the edges and soft and melty in the center will be the star at the next tailgate. If you love finger food and mac and cheese, this recipe is for you.
Lemony Marshmallow Glaze
Tried this when I didn't have any confectioners' sugar. I poured this over an angel food cake and had a few tablespoons left over. My husband almost ate the entire cake and spooned the leftover glaze onto his slices. Would also recommend this for pound cake, sponge cake, and cookies.
"Pretty Much a Piece of Heaven" Black Forest Cake
I lived in Germany when I was little and I continue to love German desserts. Black Forest Cake is one of my faves, only I Americanized it and made it more amazing! I took my mom's great chocolate cake and added to it to create this masterpiece which recently took first place in the cake division of our city bake-off. My husband took the leftovers to a Chemistry Society meeting and they said that it was amazing and he didn't bring any back home with him. I hope you enjoy it just as much as those judges and those crazy chemists.
