Christmas Pasta Salad
The orzo in this salad is reminiscent of pine needles and when dressed in pesto brings a lovely green hue. Perlini mozzarella balls become ornaments, as do cherry tomatoes and ribbons of basil and pepperoni. I do not add salt as I find the pepperoni and pesto to be ample enough. Additional toppings to consider are slivers of red onion, black olives, and diced green bell pepper. I don't like balsamic vinegar, thus the lemon juice.
Spinach Salad with Blood Oranges and Macadamia Nuts
Blood oranges are only in season for a few brief times a year, but they are so delicious and unusual that I wanted to create a recipe worthy of them. This colorful salad always gets rave reviews, and I always get asked for the recipe. My husband says it is the best salad he's ever had!
Festive Fall Turkey Salad
I created this recipe to use leftover holiday turkey. It's a classic bound salad using mayonnaise and celery, but it also includes fresh cranberries, orange juice and cashews. Although new to our menu, it has become a holiday favorite. My family requests I make my own turkey before Thanksgiving so I can serve this salad as an appetizer at our holiday feast. I hope you will find it as enjoyable as we do. Enjoy it on rolls, in wraps, or as a spread with crackers.
Persimmon, Pomegranate, and Massaged Kale Salad
A beautiful winter celebration salad to kick off a happy and super healthy holiday season! Add cooked quinoa if desired.
Swedish Tea Ring
This is a hand-shaped, filled yeast bread that my 2-year-old daughter loves to help prepare. The dough can be made ahead and refrigerated, then baked in the morning. Sprinkle chopped, toasted almonds over the ring if you wish. Nuts can also be added to the filling along with the raisins.
Mizeria (Polish Cucumber Salad)
Mizeria is a Polish cucumber salad. I serve it on Christmas Eve.
Butterhorns
To DIE for, buttery crescent rolls that divide up the work between two days. This yeast-raised dough may be kept in the refrigerator, and used over a period of 2 weeks! So you can make them fresh when you like.
Chef John's Sweet Potato Biscuits
These sweet potato biscuits are a great way to use leftover Thanksgiving sweet potatoes, but they're even better right on that holiday table with the rest of the feast. By forming and folding dough, we develop beautifully buttery layers and avoid overmixing. These were delicious with the pomegranate spread.
Schnitzbrot (German Christmas Bread)
The name of this bread is pronounced 'shnits brote.' It's a wonderfully dark, fruity bread that can be dusted with confectioners' sugar. Age the loaves 3 days before slicing them, and serve with butter.
Christmas Lefse
This is a Norwegian-style lefse, that our family makes together every Christmas Eve morning. The potato dough is refrigerated overnight to make the lefse more tender. Delicious spread with butter and either white sugar or brown sugar!
Glazed Lemon Bread
My mother makes this recipe every winter when her lemon tree had ripe fruit. A wonderful gift for friends and neighbors during the Christmas season.
Coffee Date Bread
I serve this coffee date bread at every holiday meal and enjoy the leftovers at breakfast. It's dark and wonderfully moist!
