Gingerbread-Pear Muffins
A beautiful combination of ginger, molasses, and pear makes these muffins moist and flavorful.
Pumpkin Zeppole
As in virtually every other pumpkin dessert, I think using pure canned pumpkin will give you the best results--it has more concentrated flavor than freshly roasted pumpkin. These light, not-too-sweet Italian doughnuts were adapted from a recipe by my old friend, Jennifer Perillo. I usually toss these in cinnamon sugar when they're still slightly warm.
Glazed Lemon Bread
My mother makes this recipe every winter when her lemon tree had ripe fruit. A wonderful gift for friends and neighbors during the Christmas season.
French Toast Pancakes
French toast pancakes are a family favorite as we can never decide on French toast or pancakes! Great for any holiday breakfasts to keep everyone happy.
Candied Fruit Bread
Try this vintage recipe for Christmas fruit bread. It belonged to my mother, and it's really good! Enjoy fruitcake taste in a quickbread form. Serve at teatime during the holidays.
Blender Yorkshire Pudding
Use your blender for a quick and easy way to make Yorkshire pudding with very little mess. This batter rises really high!
Dansk Aebleskiver (Danish Doughnuts)
This traditional Danish donut is a favorite family affair, especially for my husband, who is from Denmark. I make the batter, my husband does the cooking, and the kids help us make them disappear! We like to dip our aebleskivers in raspberry jam, maple syrup, and powdered sugar. The cardamom gives them that something extra. No wonder this recipe is a family favorite! Danish cooks use a long knitting needle to turn doughnuts, but you can use a fork, too.
Swedish Kringles
A Swedish kringle is a flaky, bar-type treat my mom made many times when I was a kid. With a tasty almond flavor, it's nice at Christmastime!
Orange Peel Bread
This is my Grandma-Ag's orange peel bread recipe. The bread brings fond memories of my childhood, visiting Agnes Frances Primm, my Grandma-Ag. As a young adult, I tried to duplicate the recipe but couldn't. I went back and begged her for the secrets. When I asked her how long it had taken to develop the tricky recipe, she flattened my ego by telling me she'd gotten it out of a magazine years before! I like to make it for Christmas.
Coffee Date Bread
I serve this coffee date bread at every holiday meal and enjoy the leftovers at breakfast. It's dark and wonderfully moist!
Chef John's Sweet Potato Muffins
Instead of sweet potato pie (which I'm not that fond of), I made sweet potato muffins and I was thrilled with the results. Muffin or cupcake? Frosted or unfrosted? Doesn't matter—this Chef John's recipe is really fantastic.
Christmas Stollen
Stollen is a sweet yeasted German bread bursting with dried fruit and a surprise marzipan filling for a delicious treat at Christmas. I got this recipe while I was head baker at London's Dorchester Hotel and have been making it ever since.
