Bánh Tét
Bánh tét and bánh chung (the square cake version) are available year-round and are traditional for the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. It's a sticky rice cake with various fillings, some are sweet and some are savory. Mung beans, pork, and sticky rice are the core ingredients in this recipe. Raffia string is usually used to tie the cakes but I've used kitchen twine. Also, traditionally these are more elaborately trussed than tied as I did here to simplify. I wrapped the cakes in foil, that's Andrea Nguyen's move. Once the cakes are cooked you can wrap them in gold or red plastic ribbon for luck in the new year.
Thai-Inspired Steamed Chicken Thighs
These tender, juicy chicken thighs are simmered in coconut juice and served in a zesty sauce that's full of umami flavor. Best served over a bed of jasmine rice.
Chinese Sticky Rice Cake
This rice cake is a sweet dessert made with glutinous rice flour (also called sweet rice flour) and red bean paste. The recipe was given to me by my Chinese sister-in-law. It has a firm custard-like texture, which is different for many Western palates and is a favorite of my family.
Homemade Wonton Soup
This is a recipe I have perfected on my own through the years. I am one who never measures, so take the measurements as a guide, not as law. This recipe is one that my family members beg me to make all the time! Enjoy!
Pineapple Tarts
Delightful little tarts with pineapple filling and a cross on the top.
Chinese-Style Baby Bok Choy with Mushroom Sauce
This Chinese-style baby bok choy with mushroom sauce is a delicious dish. It is an authentic Chinese recipe that I use for my cooking. Baby bok choy and mushrooms are the main ingredients.
Hoisin-Glazed Salmon
This spicy hoisin-glazed salmon has sweet and spicy flavors with a bold taste!
Easy Mochi
Mochi are small, sweet Japanese cakes made with glutinous rice flour (mochiko). They have a soft, chewy outer layer and a deliciously sticky filling made of sweetened red bean paste. Freezing the red bean paste before you use it is optional but it does make the process easier.
Fortune Cookies
Fortunes cookies are fun to make at home and fill with your own witty messages! This is a great recipe for Chinese New Year celebrations or any party.
Bourbon Fried Apples
These bourbon fried apples are a slightly healthier spin on the usual fried apples. The skin is left on, and the reduced butter and sugar are offset with flavor-boosting bourbon, raisins, cinnamon, and lemon juice. I use Cameo apples for this recipe, as they are naturally sweet and hold their shape well, but if you're using a tarter variety, you may wish to increase the brown sugar and omit the lemon juice. Golden rum can substitute for bourbon.
Foolproof Poached Eggs
Delicious, foolproof poached eggs. The vinegar will help the egg whites set more easily.
Broiled Grapefruit
Sweeten up your morning with this nifty way to prepare grapefruit! This is the only way my mother could convince me to eat my grapefruit, and I still eat it this way.
