Swedish Kringles
A Swedish kringle is a flaky, bar-type treat my mom made many times when I was a kid. With a tasty almond flavor, it's nice at Christmastime!
Dansk Aebleskiver (Danish Doughnuts)
This traditional Danish donut is a favorite family affair, especially for my husband, who is from Denmark. I make the batter, my husband does the cooking, and the kids help us make them disappear! We like to dip our aebleskivers in raspberry jam, maple syrup, and powdered sugar. The cardamom gives them that something extra. No wonder this recipe is a family favorite! Danish cooks use a long knitting needle to turn doughnuts, but you can use a fork, too.
Candied Fruit Bread
Try this vintage recipe for Christmas fruit bread. It belonged to my mother, and it's really good! Enjoy fruitcake taste in a quickbread form. Serve at teatime during the holidays.
Easy Beer Bread Mix
I combine all the dry ingredients in this beer bread mix, put them in 1-quart canning jars or resealable plastic bags, and give them as gifts. All the recipient needs to add is the can of beer and butter over the top of the loaf. You know you have a winner when people ask for the recipe!
Zeppoli
Italian fried bread dough is traditionally part of an Italian Christmas Eve celebration.
Trinidad Sweetbread
A traditional coconut and fruit bread from the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean.
Kolachky
My father and grandparents were born in Czechoslovakia. I used to watch my grandmother make these small kolachky pastries at Christmas time and I couldn't wait to eat them when she was all done. I do hope you will enjoy this recipe as much as I do. You will need a large area to work.
Panettone Bread
This panettone with currants, raisins, and lemon zest is an easy recipe to make for a fruity holiday bread.
Cranberry Scones
A quick basic scone recipe with traditional holiday ingredients...great treat for Christmas morning! Serve warm with butter and tea!
Danish Almond Puff
My mom used to make this Almond Puff every year for Christmas. It is very elegant and pretty--and surprisingly easy to make. I almost always have every ingredient already in my cupboard. I made it myself for the first time and my husband loved it. I'm planning to make it for his mom when she comes to visit. This is a fun one to share.
Christmas Stollen
Stollen is a sweet yeasted German bread bursting with dried fruit and a surprise marzipan filling for a delicious treat at Christmas. I got this recipe while I was head baker at London's Dorchester Hotel and have been making it ever since.
Mohnstollen (Poppy Seed Stollen)
Mohnstollen is a beautiful poppy seed stollen that's often served at Christmas, and this recipe comes straight from Germany. Freshly ground poppy seeds taste best — in Germany, you can find special grinders for poppy seeds, but you can also use a mortar and pestle. Don't use a regular spice grinder though, as poppy seeds contain a lot of oil that will clog the grinder.
