Homemade Herb Salt
Yes, the color in this salt will fade within a few weeks, but the herby flavor and aroma will remain intact for much longer. I described this as a finishing salt, meaning it's used to season cooked food at the table; however, it can also be used in place of regular salt in any recipe preparation.
Sweet Fire Rib Rub
Also goes very good on some chicken, tri-tip steaks, or pretty much anything BBQ. I do a lot of smoked foods, and it's perfect.
Vanilla Sugar
A lot of European cookie recipes use vanilla sugar in place of vanilla extract. My mother would make a large canister in August in preparation for her cookie baking season (between Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas holidays).
Berbere (Ethiopian Spice)
For those of you who have difficulty locating berbere (Ethiopian spice) in your local grocery store, this recipe is a good substitute that is easy to make. Note that it is quite spicy, so use it to taste. This spice combination is used in many Ethiopian dishes including doro wat, an Ethiopian chicken dish.
Beef Short Rib French Onion Soup
This French onion soup with beef short ribs has great flavor and is a bit more hearty than the classic. The microwave-, oven-, and dishwasher-safe crocks cost around $30 for a set of four and come in handy for all sorts of things, so they are worth it.
French Onion Soup VI
A wonderful hearty soup topped with a crunchy seasoned crouton with melted mozzarella cheese. Great for a chilly fall or winter day.
French Onion Soup (Slow Cooker)
My mom's soup that I remember from childhood. Probably as basic as it gets. Add cheese of choice and croutons, if desired.
French Onion Soup IX
Thickly sliced onions are slowly cooked in butter, then combined with beef broth and Romano cheese before being ladled into bowls, and topped with toast and cheese.
Homemade Apple Pie Spice
Apple pie spice is simple to make at home with just three ingredients you likely already have! Scale this recipe to make a batch as large or small as you like.
The Famous Seafood Seasoning Recipe
This seafood seasoning recipe really wasn't that hard to crack. The ingredients are printed on the container! The only difficult part was working out the correct ratios for each spice or herb, but patience, perseverance, and good ol' trial and error saved the day. The original Old Bay Seasoning was invented in the 1940s by an American-German immigrant named Gustav Brunn. Initially, it was intended only for use on crab meat (as there was plenty of it in the Chesapeake Bay area where Gustav lived), but in the last decade or so, it's been used in other food areas, such as poultry and salads.
Lebanese Seven Spices
This Lebanese 7-spice seasoning mix will add warm flavors to lots of dishes! Try it on chicken, eggs, or in a marinade.
All-Purpose No-Salt Seasoning Mix
This salt-free seasoning is from my mother-in-law, Helen. It's scrumptious on almost everything. I make big batches and use them for teacher gifts.
