Shepherd's Pie
Make this shepherd's pie with ground beef or lamb, carrots, and onions in a rich gravy. Top with a layer of cheesy mashed potato to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. It's a great way to sneak some extra veggies into dinner!
Meat Pie
This meat pie is delicious! I got it from my husband's mother. She is French so I believe this is a French meat pie recipe. Beef, pork, and potato are all nicely spiced and baked together. It's yummy and pretty easy to make too! It's best served fresh, but you can also make it ahead and freeze or refrigerate it. Serve the pie by itself or with a beef gravy.
Stromboli
My stromboli recipe uses premade pizza dough. Kids and adults love this pizza creation. I always have leftover sauce, so I serve it the next day over hot spaghetti.
Michigan Hot Dog
This regional specialty has a unique sauce which is typically slightly chunkier and thicker than most hot dog sauces. You'll often find this served on top-split buns, but regular hot dog buns will work. There are many versions of this sauce, but this is the way we like ours.
Corned Beef Special Sandwiches
I think of this corned beef sandwich recipe as a cousin to the Reuben. It's a cold sandwich of corned beef topped with Russian dressing and coleslaw on Jewish rye. Yum!
White Sloppy Joes
A quick and easy alternative to regular Sloppy Joes, these are made with ground beef in a creamy white sauce.
Slow Cooker Philly Steak Sandwich Meat
This crockpot Philly cheese steak recipe uses beef sirloin, but it can be made using lower-grade roasts. The meat is always tender, and makes its own au jus if you like to dip as I do. To serve as sandwiches, put meat on a sub bun and top with sautรฉed onion and green pepper. Top with Swiss or provolone cheese and broil until the cheese just starts to melt.
Easy Beef Shawarma
Delicious thin-cut beef strips (shawarma) with tahini sauce in a tortilla wrap.
Chicago-Inspired Italian Beef Sandwich
I tried to combine the traditional Italian beef sandwich with the French dip sandwich with a little nod to the pulled pork sandwich. Instead of using thinly sliced roast beef, I used stew beef, with apologies to my friends from Chicago.
Hodie's Sloppy Joes
This was my Grandma's recipe for Sloppy Joes. It is very easy to make and uses items you probably already have in your pantry. Kids, as well as the adults, will love this All-American favorite. A slice of American cheese adds a nice touch. For an extra kick, add your favorite hot sauce to taste.
Coney Island Hot Dogs
The story of how the Coney Island hog dog got to the Midwest is pretty straightforward, but no one really knows exactly how the wiener first came to be topped with what is basically a hot meat relish. I have no idea how authentic this is and have never been to Detroit or even Flint. I have had Nathan's version, which I enjoyed, but the word on the street is that it's not nearly as good as the relatives it spawned.
Bologna Salad Sandwich Spread
My friend's mom made this bologna salad spread for our Iowa Teen Club luncheon back in the 1950s. I used to make it for my kids when they were growing up, and they still love it! Sweet relish and eggs round out the flavor of bologna in this simple but delicious spread. Serve it on cocktail toast, or use it in sandwiches. The amount of egg, salad dressing, and relish can be adjusted to taste.
